The Lawretanian: Visiting lecturer discusses moral quandaries in geoengineering

Report on a talk by Bjornar Egede-Nissen. „He admitted that there are some justifications of doing SRM research, including the cost-benefit analysis, the value of scientific research and the emergency options for SRM research. According to Egede-Nissen, the SRM can be comparatively cheap, but the long time-frame required and the side effects of doing SRM research can be cause for reconsideration.“

„Here, we consider the scenario in which SRM—via stratospheric aerosol injection—is terminated abruptly following an implementation period during which anthropogenic GHG emissions have continued.“

„Here we present the effects that increased amounts of sulfate aerosol have on stratospheric meteorology and/or ozone concentrations, as simulated by two general circulation models and two coupled chemistry-climate models within the experiments G3 and G4 of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP).“

„We analyzed output from the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) for the two most “realistic” scenarios, which use the Representative Concentration Pathway of 4.5 Wm-2 by 2100 (RCP4.5) as the control run and inject sulfate aerosol precursors into the stratosphere.“
