FCEA Blog: Forum Discussion- Rhode Island H 7578: The Climate Geoengineering Act of 2016

„In 2015 and 2016, a bill was introduced in the Rhode Island House of Representatives to regulate climate geoengineering — an attempt that caught many by surprise, as legislating a technology with global impacts on the state level is a novel approach. In this forum,[nbsp]Wil Burns, Co-Executive Director of the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment, who helped re-draft the bill in 2016, science and technology policy experts, and political scientists discuss this move: its drawbacks, merits, and lessons learned. – Holly Jean Buck“

Jamaica Gleaner: New climate change programme raises concern – Mahlung

„The big concern for me, though, being from a small island which suffers greatly from the negative impact of climate change, is that it could also provide an incentive for countries not to reduce their greenhouse emissions. Instead, they would rely on this technology, which would be defeating the whole purpose to combating climate change. It could give people a false sense of hope,“ Mahlung told The Gleaner.“

Center for Carbon Removal: Science Special – Wetland Restoration

„Welcome to Science Special! The weekly post where we bring you the best research and reports on different carbon removal technologies. This week’s topic is wetland restoration: The simple process of photosynthesis on a grand scale can benefit the world’s push to reduce and remove carbon. Wetlands can be particularly helpful in this quest since their saturated soils prevent the decay of biomass, effectively storing carbon in large quantities.“

Kreidenweis, Ulrich; et al. (2016): Afforestation to mitigate climate change. Impacts on food prices under consideration of albedo effects

Kreidenweis, Ulrich; Humpenöder, Florian; Stevanović, Miodrag; Bodirsky, Benjamin Leon; Kriegler, Elmar; Lotze-Campen, Hermann; Popp, Alexander (2016): Afforestation to mitigate climate change. Impacts on food prices under consideration of albedo effects. In Environ. Res. Lett. 11 (8), p. 85001–85001. DOI 10.1088/1748-9326/11/8/085001

„We assessed the food price response of afforestation, and considered the albedo effect with scenarios in which afforestation was restricted to certain latitudinal zones. In our study, afforestation was incentivized by a globally uniform reward for carbon uptake in the terrestrial biosphere. This resulted in large-scale afforestation (2580 Mha globally) and substantial carbon sequestration (860 GtCO2) up to the end of the century.“
