Master thesis: Integrated Energy Efficient CO2 Removal System via Alkali-based Sorbent with Isopropanol System

by Mohammad Roshaan Saeed, submitted to the faculty of the University of Minnesota Duluth, 27 pp.

In this work, a low temperature, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly CO2 capture method has been investigated using potassium bicarbonate-alcohol-H2O mixtures as sorbents. The addition of alcohol, particularly isopropanol, to the potassium bicarbonate solution can significantly increase CO2 desorption and capture capacity.

In startup Verdox, carbon capture meets electrification

By Heather Clancy on GreenBiz.com

The startup, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this week scored a $20 million investment from aluminum maker Norsk Hydro, which sees the technology as an important piece for decarbonizing its smelters. Verdox applies an electrochemical approach to absorb carbon dioxide, a method that uses no heat like other methods, according to Brian Baynes, co-founder and CEO of the company.

Michaga et al. (2022): Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) potential in jet fuel production from forestry residues: A combined Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessment approach

Maria Fernanda Rojas Michaga, Stavros Michailos, Muhammad Akram, Evelyn Cardozo, Kevin J. Hughes, Derek Ingham, Mohamed Pourkashanian IN: Energy Conversion and Management, Volume 255, 2022, doi.org/10.1016/j.enconman.2022.115346.

The present research is a one-of-a-kind study for the jet fuel production within the BECCS concept. The process has been modelled within the Aspen Plus and Matlab software to obtain detailed and realistic mass and energy balances. Based on these balances, the technical, economic and environmental parameters have been calculated.

Molahid et al. (2022): CO2 Sequestration through Mineral Carbonation: Effect of Different Parameters on Carbonation of Fe-Rich Mine Waste Materials

Verma Loretta M. Molahid, Faradiella Mohd Kusin, Sharifah Nur Munirah Syed Hasan, Noor Allesya Alis Ramli, Ahmad Makmom Abdullah IN: Processes 2022, 10, 432, https://doi.org/10.3390/pr10020432

This study aims to evaluate the potential of reusing Fe-rich mine waste for carbon sequestration by assessing the influence of pH condition, particle size fraction and reaction temperature on the carbonation reaction. The findings demonstrated that Fe-rich mine waste has a high potential to be utilized as feedstock for mineral carbonation.
