The global carbon sequestration and avoided emissions potentially achieved via blue carbon is high (∼3% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions); however, it is limited by multidisciplinary and interacting uncertainties spanning the social, governance, financial, and technological dimensions. The authors compiled a transdisciplinary team of experts to elucidate these challenges and identify a way forward.

Direct air capture (DAC) is one type of technological carbon removal that shows promise today and will likely be part of a larger carbon removal portfolio. Compared to other types of carbon removal it uses relatively little space and can also be sited flexibly, so would avoid competition with other land uses and could be built on marginal land or near geological storage sites to minimize the need for CO2 pipelines. Here the authors answer some key questions about DAC.

The Faculty of Geosciences – Physical Geography and Land Use Systems, Ludwigs-Maximilians University of Munich (Germany), is looking for a project manager for an interdisciplinary research programme in the field of climate protection. The manager coordinates all internal and external concerns of the programme and thus contributes substantially to creating the science basis for political decision-making in research- and climate-policy in Germany and world-wide. The research program investigates measures to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, such as afforestation or technological solutions.

Virtual event: Accelerating the market for carbon removal

This April, Stripe launched the Frontier fund, a USD 925 million advanced market commitment (AMC) for carbon removal start-ups, with investments from Alphabet, Shopify, Meta Platforms and McKinsey & Co. Frontier will evaluate technologies based on factors such as permanence, land footprint, costs, capacity and justice, and enable start-ups to scale up their operations and reduce costs.

A few weeks ahead of Climeworks‘ Direct Air Capture Summit 2022, this is a „fireside chat“ with Stripe’s Head of Climate, Nan Ransohoff, who leads Frontier. Moderated by Julie Gosalvez, Chief Marketing Officer at Climeworks, the event will dive into Frontier’s novel AMC approach and how it will help to scale up – and stimulate supply of – permanent carbon removal technologies.

DrawDAO Project

DrawDAO is a community of carbon drawdown project operators, climate activists, scientists, and artists fighting climate change via the open-sourcing of carbon dioxide removal & storage (CDRS) methodologies and the pledging of funds to new and emerging CDRS projects. They are on a mission to drive awareness to, catalyze, and fund the creation of hundreds of new carbon drawdown projects. Regardless of funder status, community members will have access to tools and support to learn how to start their own carbon drawdown projects.

Using alkaline rock minerals to combat climate change

How can carbon dioxide (CO2) be removed from the atmosphere and stored safely and permanently in the ocean? This question is being investigated by scientists from seven nations led by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in an experiment just starting in the Raunefjord near Bergen, Norway. In mesocosms, free-floating, experimental enclosures, they are exploring whether the ocean can absorb additional CO2 from the atmosphere through the addition of alkaline minerals – known as ocean alkalinisation – and what influence this has on marine communities. The study will last until mid-July and takes place as part of the Ocean-based Negative Emission Technologies (OceanNETs) project funded by the European Union.
