4 Xprize winning teams

This week in the series, four of the teams were introduced that won the Carbon Removal Xprize Milestone award. On April 22nd, Xprize announced the 15 winners of the second round of their competition for carbon removal solutions. Each of these teams was been awarded $1 million to help them compete for the grand prize of $50 million, or 3 $30 million runner-up slots, which will be awarded three years from now.

CSLF Carbon Dioxide Removal Workshop

The Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) organises a workshop on Carbon Dioxide Removal, organised by the CSLF, IEAGHG, and CEM CCUS. The workshop will be held on June 28th , 2022, in Bergen, Norway, and will coincide with the next CSLF Technical Group meeting being held the day before. It is an in-person meeting with remote access as well.

Bloomberg: Is Carbon Removal Finally Getting Serious?

„In a field long plagued by hype and high costs, new startups are showing real promise. The question is whether they can scale up in time. […] Philanthropists and government agencies have long offered prizes for various carbon-removal benchmarks. And inchoate efforts are underway to turn stored carbon dioxide into something economically useful. Yet none of these efforts amounts to a sustainable business. […] In time, companies may devise cleverer ways to commercialize removed carbon, rendering advance commitments moot. Perhaps the $12 billion Congress pledged to the technology in last year’s infrastructure bill will lead to a breakthrough. Maybe green-energy investment will yield much faster emissions reductions than expected. But for now, an all-of-the-above approach makes sense — and harnessing the magic of competition can only help.“

Voters Want State and Federal Lawmakers to Lead on Carbon Dioxide Removal

„The New York Carbon Dioxide Removal Leadership Act (CDRLA) marks the first of its kind: a state-level bill aimed at advancing CDR deployment in the immediate term to ensure it’s ready to be scaled up when we most need it and done so in a sustainable and progressive way. The act authorizes the creation of a state-run advance market commitment for durable carbon removal, starting with a very small amount (10,000 tons in 2024) that doubles each year through 2029.[…] And the New York CDRLA is popular: recent Data for Progress polling in New York state finds that 72 percent of voters approve of the state legislature passing a bill to accelerate the development of carbon removal approaches and technologies. This includes 85 percent of Democrats, 66 percent of Independents, and 57 percent of Republicans.“

CNN: DOE announces multibillion-dollar project to kickstart a carbon dioxide removal industry in US

The US Department of Energy is announcing a massive investment in direct air carbon removal projects, in hopes of kickstarting an industry. On Thursday the DOE relesead a notice of intent for developers for four direct air capture hubs – each capable of removing over a million tons of CO2 per year — using $3.5 billion from the bipartisan infrastructure law.

Greenhouse gas removal: How could it help the UK reach net-zero by 2050?

A mix of scientists, economists and government advisers met in London last week to discuss how removing greenhouse gases from air could help the UK hit net-zero emissions by 2050. Over two days, researchers and policy experts debated the scalability of CDR techniques, as well as the potential benefits and drawbacks for UK communities and the country’s ailing wildlife.
