Su et al. (2023): Direct Air Capture of CO2 through Carbonate Alkalinity Generated by Phytoplankton Nitrate Assimilation

Jing Su, Hui Teng, Xiang Wan, Jainchao Zhang & Cong-Qiang Liu IN: Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 20(1), 550; https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph20010550

Here the authors report an ocean alkalinity-based CO2 sequestration scheme, taking advantage of proton consumption during nitrate assimilation by marine photosynthetic microbes, and the ensuing enhancement of seawater CO2 absorption.

Buck-Wiese et al. (2022): Fucoid brown algae inject fucoidan carbon into the ocean

Hagen Buck-Wiese, Mona A. Andskog, Nguyen P. Nguyen & Jan-Hendrick Hehemann IN: PNAS 120 (1), https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2210561119

In this article, introducing quantitative tools for marinepolysaccharides, the authors show the extracellular matrix polysaccharide fucoidan to constitute up to half of brown algal exudates. This quantification of fucoidan can assess its contribution to carbon sequestration.

Studie: CO2-Speicherung sollte vom Staat stärker finanziell unterstützt werden

29.12.2022 on iwr.de

Habeck will CO2-Speicherung ermöglichen

Reisinger & Geden (2022): Net-zero targets and non-CO2 mitigation

Andy Reisinger & Oliver Geden IN: One Earth Volume 5 (12) P1319-1321, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.2022.11.014

Dr. Andy Reisinger, commissioner at He Pou a Rangi (the New Zealand Climate Change Commission) and vice chair of Working Group III at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); and Dr. Oliver Geden, senior fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, lead author for IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Working Group III, and member of the core writing team for the IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report, have recently spoken with One Earth about the prospects for limiting warming to 1.5°C and windows of opportunity to accelerate climate action.

Wood et al. (2023): Impacts of dissolved phosphorus and soil-mineral-fluid interactions on CO2 removal through enhanced weathering of wollastonite in soil

Cameron Wood, Anna L. Harrison, Ian M. Power IN: Applied Geochemistry 148, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apgeochem.2022.105511.

The results of this study indicate that adsorption to soils may limit the ability of P to enhance wollastonite weathering, that silicate weathering behaviour within soils differs substantially from that of pure mineral phases, and that CO2 budgets must be carefully constrained to assess the source of stored CO2.
