Biotic ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods rely on various mechanisms to sink organic carbon to ocean depths, ultimately relying on seafloor burial to trap carbon. However, its long-term efficacy and environmental impacts remain uncertain, and systematic evaluation of underlying controls is warranted before large-scale deployment. To this end, the authors develop a 1D reactive-transport model of organic matter (OM) diagenesis, forced by global ocean biogeochemical model outputs, capable of estimating the sediment total organic carbon, porewater profiles of nutrients and benthic fluxes at different oceanic settings.
