“Porthos has taken a final investment decision to develop the first major CO2 transport and storage system in the Netherlands. In 2024 construction will begin in Rotterdam, with the Porthos system expected to be operational by 2026. The Porthos infrastructure requires an investment of €1.3 billion. With the final investment decision reached, Porthos will now award contracts required to realise the project.”
As part of a review project, Tim Jesper Surhoff (Postdoctoral Researcher at Yale University, USA) is compiling a list of literature on enhanced rock weathering and asks which articles are still missing to create a complete database? The current and future list is public and he think very helpful for people trying to get into the field.

The US Department of Energy on Friday announced that projects in Texas and Louisiana to remove more than 2 million tonnes of carbon emissions will get over $1 billion in federal grants, a key step in scaling up Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.

The Carbon to Sea Initiative, a non-profit research and development effort, launched today to accelerate research into ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), which is a way to address climate change. OAE could be among the most effective and scalable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches. Carbon to Sea has raised more than $50 million from philanthropic funders and to date has committed $23 million in grant funding to a network of dozens of researchers focused on OAE. A new European project, Strategies for the Evaluation and Assessment of Ocean based Carbon Dioxide Removal (SEAO2-CDR), has been launched to enhance our understanding of the effects, benefits, and feasibility of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and storing it in the ocean. The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is the scientific and technical lead on the four-year interdisciplinary Horizon Europe (EU) funded project, which is co-ordinated by Uniresearch and involves 13 organisations who will provide scientific, economic, legal, political, social, and ethical expertise.
Developed in 2021, Ocean Visions’ Launchpad program supports selected companies using ocean-based approaches that are competing for the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal. Ocean Visions are now initiating Launchpad’s second cohort, and want to expand the search profile beyond XPRIZE participants to include all innovators working on ocean-based CDR pathways, as well as those who are enabling or improving the understanding of these pathways. The latter includes innovators working on improving monitoring or measurement (as part of MRV) of ocean-based CDR, as well as addressing knowledge gaps identified in the Ocean Visions Road Maps, such as developing in water tools for autonomous CDR operations or addressing engineering challenges to better deliver or measure ocean-based CDR.

“Carbon Kapture, a start-up dedicated to the removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere, announce the launch of its first seaweed farm. The company has developed a business model allowing its customers to sponsor seaweed grown on ropes to absorb CO₂ directly from the sea. It then converts the seaweed into biochar, a stable form of carbon that can be used to enrich soil and reduce the need for fertiliser. Carbon Kapture has partnered with shellfish farmers in Ireland to grow the seaweed, with plans for its first farm to become even larger than Amazon’s newly funded North Sea Farm 1 project by the end of the year.”
