The Delivery of C2G’s Mission: A catalytic journey toward governance of large-scale CDR and SRM – perspectives from stakeholders

October 30, 2023, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EDT, hosted by Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G), hybrid

C2G’s purpose is to bring to governments’ attention the urgent need to address the governance of emerging climate-altering techniques, including carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and solar radiation modification (SRM). Following completion of its mission, C2G will close-down at the end of 2023. As part of our final activities, C2G is planning a hybrid event on 30 October to celebrate C2G’s 7 years of achievement and share lessons learned looking back at major challenges, advancements and milestones related to the governance of CDR and SRM, as well as to provide an opportunity to look ahead to all that has yet to be accomplished.

Webinar: Scrubbing the Skies – Potential Role of BBNJ Treaty in Ocean-Based CDR

November 7th, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm CEThosted by Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy

In September of this year, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty under the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea was opened for signature. The treaty is slated to enter into force after sixty nations ratify it. Given the fact that many ocean-based carbon dioxide removal approaches will either be deployed in the open oceans, or could have impacts in these areas, the BBNJ may prove to a key regulatory framework for the emerging industry. In this webinar, two researchers focused on the interface of the BBNJ and ocean CDR will join Simon Nicholson, Co-Chair of the Institute for Carbon Removal Law & Policy, in a roundtable discussion of the BBNJ’s potential future role in regulating ocean CDR approaches, as well how the BBNJ will interface with other pertinent ocean regimes.

Seminar and networking in Brussels for permanent removals: How can BECCS contribute to your net-zero target?

7th of November; 3 p.m – 5 p.m; Stockholm Region EU Office or online

This seminar will highlight the emerging market demand for carbon removal units, discuss how permanent removals can support the achievement of net-zero targets, increase your knowledge of BECCS and place the technology in a larger European context. Meet company leaders, politicians, NGO:s and researchers who will discuss the latest in this fast-moving field. After the seminar you are invited to mingle with the participants.

Keynote speakers: Dr. Oliver Geden, Head of Research Cluster Climate Policy and Politics, German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). Vice-Chair, Working Group III Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); Dr. Piera Patrizio, Head of Research, Science Based Targets initiativ; Dr. Fabian Levihn, Head of R&D Stockholm Exergi, Docent (reader) at the Royal Intitute of Technology, EU DG Clima expert on carbon removals

Webinar: Scrubbing the Skies – Upscaling Biochar as a Soil Amendment and Waste Management Technology: Lessons from Agricultural History

October 26th, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm ET, hosted by Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy

Join the next event in the webinar series, “Scrubbing the Skies: The Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change“ hosted by Wil Burns, Co-Director of the Institute for Carbon Removal and Policy. Agricultural biochar offers an appealing way to sequester CO2 while also improving farm soils. By pyrolising organic material (including farm and forestry wastes, but also possibly purpose-grown bio-crops), it is possible to lock atmospheric carbon into a stable solid form, which has numerous benefits when ground up and added to farm soils. Achieving this in practice, however, will require major changes to agricultural and waste management systems, with substantial ramifications from a social, economic, and political perspective. Panelist is Cameron Roberts, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Wisconsin Madison Centre for Sustainability and the Global Environment.
