Zhao, Mengying; Cao, Long; Duan, Lei; Bala, Govindasamy; Caldeira, Ken (2020): Climate more responsive to marine cloud brightening than ocean albedo modification: A model study. In Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres. DOI: 10.1029/2020JD033256.

„Marine cloud brightening (MCB) and ocean albedo modification (OAM) are two proposed approaches to intentionally reflect sunlight back to space over oceanic regions. Using the NCAR Community Earth System Model, we compare climate response to MCB and OAM under the framework of fast adjustment and slow feedback.“

C2G: Working with nature, so nature can work with us

„In societies that had started to separate humans from the natural world, people are returning to the notion that nature is something we are part of, integrally, which offers indispensable solutions to the multiple crises we face – including climate change. (Of course, there are many who never lost this understanding.)“

C2G: Blog post: Putting the Great Barrier Reef marine cloud brightening experiment into context

„In what is hoped to be a first step towards mitigating future GBR coral bleaching events,[nbsp]Australian scientists conducted the first outdoor marine cloud brightening (MCB) experiment[nbsp]in late March.[nbsp]The purpose of this experiment was to test a delivery mechanism[nbsp]comprised of 100 high-pressure nozzles that can spray nano-sized sea-salt particles into the air above the reef. At the time this experiment was conducted,[nbsp]leading reef scientists announced that the GBR was undergoing the third mass coral bleaching event in five years.“

„Using the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Earth System Model, we performed simulations that represent four idealized radiation modification options: solar constant reduction, sulfate aerosol increase (SAI), marine cloud brightening, and cirrus cloud thinning (CCT).“

Duan, L.; Cao, L.; Bala, G.; Caldeira, K. (2018): Comparison of the Fast and Slow Climate Response to Three Radiation Management Geoengineering Schemes. In: J. Geophys. Res. Atmos. DOI: 10.1029/2018JD029034.

„Geoengineering has been proposed as a backup approach to rapidly cool the Earth and avoid damages associated with anthropogenic climate change. In this study, we use the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) to conduct a series of slab‐ocean and prescribed sea‐surface‐temperature simulations to investigate the climate response to three proposed radiation management geoengineering schemes: stratospheric aerosol increase (SAI), marine cloud brightening (MCB), and cirrus cloud thinning (CCT).“
