Salamanca, F.; et al. (2016): Citywide Impacts of Cool Roof and Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Deployment on Near-Surface Air Temperature and Cooling Energy Demand

Salamanca, F.; Georgescu, M.; Mahalov, A.; Moustaoui, M.; Martilli, A. (2016): Citywide Impacts of Cool Roof and Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Deployment on Near-Surface Air Temperature and Cooling Energy Demand. In Boundary-Layer Meteorol. DOI 10.1007/s10546-016-0160-y.

„We conduct a suite of sensitivity experiments (with different coverage rates of cool roof and rooftop solar photovoltaic deployment) for a 10-day clear-sky extreme heat period over the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas at high spatial resolution (1-km horizontal grid spacing). Results show that deployment of cool roofs and rooftop solar photovoltaic panels reduce near-surface air temperature across the diurnal cycle and decrease daily citywide cooling energy demand.“

Ecofys: Taking carbon from the atmosphere

„The dust is beginning to settle after Paris and the focus is now on implementation but one of the interesting questions to arise is what is needed to reach a 1.5°C target. What all the scenarios say is that you not only need to stop emitting carbon but you also need to have something that takes carbon out of the atmosphere. This is not as close to science fiction as it sounds – carbon is taken out of the atmosphere all the time through growing plants.“

Grist: Could a giant umbrella made of tiny robots save us from climate chaos?

„We might be able to stop the Earth from overheating by shooting 16 trillion small robots into space to form a huge sunshade, says astronomer Roger Angel. A better idea would be to just stop burning fossil fuels. But since we’re not doing so well on that front, scientists are cooking up various geoengineering scenarios that they say could help us avoid the worst impacts of climate change.“

the guardian: Abandon hype in climate models

„The economic models that are used to inform climate policy currently contain an unhealthy dose of wishful thinking. Technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the air are assumed in the models that avoid dangerous climate change – but such technologies do not yet exist and it is unclear whether they could be deployed at a meaningful scale. „
