Centre for International Governance Innovation: Preparing for Climate Intervention Decision Making in the Global South. A Role for Canada and India

„Countries in the Global South are incentivized through funding schemes, such as the Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative (SRMGI) Decimal Fund,1 to invest in pathways that could lead toward justification for deployment of climate intervention technologies, without adequate consideration of the social dimensions of engagement in climate intervention research.“

Science: New way to turn carbon dioxide into coal could ‘rewind the emissions clock’

„If humans hope to limit climate change to just 2°C of warming, we’ve got a lot of work to do, scientists say: reducing emissions, planting trees, and scrubbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the skies with the latest technologies. Now, a new process can convert gaseous CO2—the product of burning fossil fuels—into solid carbon at room temperature, using only a trickle of electricity. But getting it to work on a planet-wide scale will be a formidable challenge.“

The Times: Altering atmosphere ‘can tackle climate change’

„Tackling global warming by using an unproven method to manipulate the Earth’s atmosphere should be considered, a leading UN diplomat has said. Speaking in Dublin, Peter Thomson, UN special envoy for the ocean, said that the time was “fast coming” to have a debate about geoengineering, although it was not a substitute for other actions that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions.“

The Japan Times: Geoengineering is a dangerous distraction

„Proponents advocate two main geoengineering strategies: carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and solar radiation modification (SRM). Both — along with most other geoengineering strategies — would depend on the widespread deployment of so-called carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), in which a suite of technologies captures carbon dioxide from industrial waste streams and stores it underground, in the oceans or in materials.“

ABC News: Can geoengineering slow climate change, or will it be used as an excuse not to cut emissions?

„Global carbon levels from 2010 needed to be cut by almost half by 2030, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, otherwise the world could be locked into catastrophic climate change. […] But no matter how fast the world switches to renewable energy, the age of untested, high-risk geoengineering could soon be upon us. So what are the most likely fixes and would they really work?“
