Report: Technology Readiness Assessment, Costs and Limitations of five shortlisted NETs

Kenneth Möllersten, Raza Naqvi, Mälardalen University, Report of the NET-RAPIDO Project: Negative emission technologies: readiness assessment, policy instrument design, options for governance and dialogue, 77 pp.

This report presents an in-depth technology readiness, cost assessment and an analysis of practical deployment barriers for NETs along with an analysis of related knowledge gaps and research needs. The selected NETs are (i) bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS); (ii) direct air capture and storage (DACCS); (iii) large-scale afforestation and reforestation; (iv) soil carbon sequestration; (v) Biochar as soil additive; (vi) Enhanced Weathering; (vii) Accelerated Mineralization; (viii) Ocean fertilization.

Nature – Liew et al. (2022): Carbon-negative production of acetone and isopropanol by gas fermentation at industrial pilot scale

Fungmin Eric Liew, Robert Nogle, Tanus Abdalla, Blake J. Rasor, Christina Canter, Rasmus O. Jensen, Lan Wang, Jonathan Strutz, Payal Chirania, Sashini De Tissera, + 17 authors IN: Nat Biotechnol 40, 335–344 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41587-021-01195-w

The authors describe the development of a carbon-negative fermentation route to producing the industrially important chemicals acetone and isopropanol from abundant, low-cost waste gas feedstocks, such as industrial emissions and syngas. Unlike traditional production processes, which result in release of greenhouse gases, this process fixes carbon. These results show that engineered acetogens enable sustainable, high-efficiency, high-selectivity chemicals production.

Ocean Visions: Program Director – GEOS

Deadline: April 18th

Ocean Visions seeks a Program Director for its GEOS program. Endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, The Global Ecosystem for Ocean Solutions (GEOS) aims to expand the foundations of Ocean Visions internationally, and establish a vibrant, global ocean solutions community of researchers, innovators, investors, decisionmakers, and other stakeholders to co-design and co-deploy equitable, durable, and scalable solutions at the ocean-climate nexus.

A scalable direct air capture process based on accelerated weathering of calcium hydroxide

by Noah McQueen, Mireille Ghoussoub, Jennifer Mills, Max Scholten (perspective article by Heirloom)

The authors provide insight into Heirloom’s DAC process that uses Earth-abundant minerals, namely calcium carbonate (CaCO 3), and renewable energy to capture carbon dioxide (CO 2) directly from air. They also discuss the need for supporting systems, such as renewable
electricity generation and geologic storage, to scale DAC.

Carbon Gap hiring Policy Manager – Eu Affairs, Policy Manager – UK and Operations Manager

Deadline: April 15, 2022

Carbon Gap is a climate not-for-profit focused on eliminating the carbon dioxide. They are „working with governments, scientists, NGOs, and businesses to unlock policy support for the full spectrum of carbon removal techniques, storing carbon safely in trees, soils, oceans, rocks, and the built environment. All Carbon Gap staff currently work remotely, and positions are open to candidates based anywhere in Europe, though a Brussels-based candidate is preferred for this role.“

Waller & Chilvers (2022): Climate Change Assessments, Publics and Digital Traces of Controversy: An Experiment in Mapping Issues with Carbon Dioxide Removal Researchers

Laurie Waller, Jason Chilvers IN: Science & Technology Studies. doi: 10.23987/sts.107662

This paper reports a participation experiment in which the authors involved an interdisciplinary group of researchers in mapping issues relating to two CDR approaches: afforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The authors discuss the prospects for bringing experimental approaches to mapping issues, publics and participation into closer relation with science and technology assessments.

World Energy Transitions Outlook 2022

by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

This second edition of the Outlook outlines priority areas and actions based on available technologies that must be realised by 2030 to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century. By laying out a map for the next eight years, the report enables policy makers to stay on the path to 2050. It provides in-depth analysis of two areas particularly relevant for the decarbonisation of end-use sectors: electrification and bioenergy. It also explores the socio-economic impacts of the 1.5°C pathway and suggests ways to speed progress towards universal access to clean energy.
