Interesting Engineering: Geoengineering VS Climate Change: How To Keep The Earth Alive

„Unfortunately, the simple fact is fixing the problem of global climate change is no longer an individual undertaking: it requires global solutions. But what if we all pull together and mend the error in our ways—stop polluting, use renewable energy sources, and live carbon neutral lives—and it still isn’t enough? Well that’s where something called geoengineering comes in, and it may be our best chance at keeping the world alive… or it might just kill it.“

Gunnarsson, I.; et al. (2018): The rapid and cost-effective capture and subsurface mineral storage of carbon and sulfur at the CarbFix2 site

Gunnarsson, I.; Aradóttir, E.; Oelkers, E.; Clark, D.; Arnarson, M.; Sigfússon, B. et al. (2018): The rapid and cost-effective capture and subsurface mineral storage of carbon and sulfur at the CarbFix2 site. In: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control 79, S. 117–126. DOI: 10.1016/j.ijggc.2018.08.014.

„Here we present a novel integrated carbon capture and storage technology, installed at the CarbFix2 storage site at Hellisheiði, Iceland that lowers considerably the cost and energy required at this site. The CarbFix2 site, located in deeper and hotter rocks than the original CarbFix site, permits the continuous injection of larger quantities of CO2 and H2S than the original site. The integrated process consists of soluble gas mixture capture in water followed by the direct injection of the resulting CO2-H2S-charged water into basaltic rock, where much of the dissolved carbon and sulfur are mineralized within months.“

Fajardy, M.; et al. (2018): Investigating the BECCS resource nexus

Fajardy, M.; Chiquier, S.; Mac Dowell, N. (2018): Investigating the BECCS resource nexus. Delivering sustainable negative emissions. In: Energy Environ. Sci. 11, S. 1581. DOI: 10.1039/C8EE01676C.

In this study, we present a series of thought experiments, using the Modelling and Optimisation of Negative Emissions Technologies (MONET) framework, to provide insight into the combinations of biomass feedstock, origin, land type, and transport route, to meet a given CO2 removal target. The optimal structure of an international BECCS supply chain was found to vary both quantitatively and qualitatively as the focus shifted from conserving water, land or biomass, to maximising energy generated, with the water use in particular increasing threefold in the land and biomass use minimisation scenario, as compared to the water minimisation scenario.

Brethomé, F.; et al. (2018): Direct air capture of CO2 via aqueous-phase absorption and crystalline-phase release using concentrated solar power

Brethomé, F.; Williams, N.; Seipp, C.; Kidder, M.; Custelcean, R. (2018): Direct air capture of CO2 via aqueous-phase absorption and crystalline-phase release using concentrated solar power. In: Nat. Energy 3 (7), S. 553–559. DOI: 10.1038/s41560-018-0150-z.

„Direct air capture of carbon dioxide offers the prospect of permanently lowering the atmospheric CO2 concentration, providing that economical and energy-efficient technologies can be developed and deployed on a large scale. Here, we report an approach to direct air capture, at the laboratory scale, using mostly off-the-shelf materials and equipment. First, CO2 absorption is achieved with readily available and environmentally friendly aqueous amino acid solutions (glycine and sarcosine) using a household humidifier.“

Soldatenko, S. A.; et al. (2018): Optimal Control of Aerosol Emissions into the Stratosphere to Stabilize the Earth’s Climate

Soldatenko, S. A.; Yusupov, R. M. (2018): Optimal Control of Aerosol Emissions into the Stratosphere to Stabilize the Earth’s Climate. In: Izvestiya Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics 54 (5), S. 480–486. DOI: 10.1134/S0001433818050122.

„The problem of the optimal control of aerosol emissions into the stratosphere to stabilize the Earth’s climate is considered based on the zero-dimensional energy balance model. The global surface-temperature deviation from the undisturbed value is the state variable, and the albedo of the artificial aerosol layer, whose time variations are functionally related to the change in the total mass of aerosol particles and, consequently, the rate of their emissions, is the control variable.“

Samoaobserver: Climate engineering is the potential game changer we need to confront

„In his article “Geoengineering worsen climate and hurts Paris Agreement” (October 11, 2018, posted online October 15, 2018), Fiu Mataése Elisara, Executive Director – O.L.S.S.I contends geoengineering[nbsp] (climate engineering) ‚…is a deliberate attempt by the rich to distract from the real priorities of fossil fuel emission reductions. A false mitigation solution that will worsen climate change and indeed does nothing but hurts the Paris Agreement.'“
