Launchpad cohort 2 application

Developed in 2021, Ocean Visions’ Launchpad program supports selected companies using ocean-based approaches that are competing for the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal. Ocean Visions are now initiating Launchpad’s second cohort, and want to expand the search profile beyond XPRIZE participants to include all innovators working on ocean-based CDR pathways, as well as those who are enabling or improving the understanding of these pathways. The latter includes innovators working on improving monitoring or measurement (as part of MRV) of ocean-based CDR, as well as addressing knowledge gaps identified in the Ocean Visions Road Maps, such as developing in water tools for autonomous CDR operations or addressing engineering challenges to better deliver or measure ocean-based CDR.

New Funding Tool Available for Seaweed Researchers

Ocean Visions releases a database of global funding opportunities that can support research and development of ocean-based carbon dioxide removal technologies, and specifically, for sinking marine biomass. This database contains detailed information about specific grant opportunities hosted by an array of international public, philanthropic, and private funders, as well as more general information about the funders themselves.

Call for Applications: Carbon Removal Justice Fellows Program

Deadline for applications: May 20, 2023

Two-week Fellows Program will run from July 10-24, 2023

The National Wildlife Federation and the Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy at American University invite applicants for the inaugural cohort of the Carbon Removal Justice Fellows Program („the Fellows Program“). It is designed to bring environmental justice voices and perspectives into the fast-developing field of carbon removal policy, research, and private sector activity. The Fellows Program will:

  • Provide participants with an introduction to the field of carbon removal, centering environmental justice considerations and concerns;
  • Include conversations with key figures in U.S. federal policymaking, the private sector, and civil society; and
  • Involve site visits to two U.S. locations grappling with decisions around carbon removal. 

They invite applications from people who work with or in environmental justice organizations, who represent frontline climate communities, or who have a strong background in environmental justice-oriented organizing and practice. The Fellows Program will provide up to ten participants with a two-week introduction to the field. In addition, one participant will take up a full-time 11-month position with the National Wildlife Federation and work closely with staff at the Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy. Applicants should identify whether they are applying for the two-week fellowship, the 11-month opportunity with the National Wildlife Federation, or both.

Call for projects: Ocean alkalinity enhancement – potential impacts on marine life and on society

Deadline: 2 May 2023

The Ocean Acidification and other ocean Changes – Impacts and Solutions (OACIS) Initiative launches its second call for research projects on the potential biological and/or socio-economic and legal impacts of ocean alkalinity enhancement: The financial support amounts to 100,000 to a maximum of 200,000 € for a duration of 2 to 3 years. Projects must start no later than March 2024. Laboratory and field studies as well as modelling approaches will be considered. Legal and socio-economic impact studies will also be funded. All ocean regions are eligible.

Google Carbon Removal Research Awards 2023

Deadline: Friday, April 28, 2023

Google is looking to fund and actively collaborate with the research community, exploring opportunities and pathways to reduce anthropogenic carbon through mechanisms of carbon removal. With these awards, Google sponsor academic research programs that address important research questions related to carbon removal to help accelerate the development of a global carbon removals sector. This research will also support Google efforts to reach net zero emissions across all of their operations and value chain by 2030. (-> Link).

Academic researchers can submit proposals that support up to three PhD students for up to three years. Google anticipates that four areas of investigation will benefit from this additional scientific support:

  • Seaweed or other organic matter sinking
  • Tropical afforestation/reforestation
  • Blue carbon
  • Enhanced weathering

IEAGHG Post Combustion Capture Conference

This post-combustion capture conference aims to be a forum to discuss the various issues related to post-combustion capture technologies status and development. It will be the opportunity to encourage technologies providers and developers to share their experiences and knowledge. Even though this conference will cover all aspects of developments relevant to post-combustion capture, it will give special attention to the capture pilot plants and large scale demonstration projects results, challenges and future plans.

Applications open for OCB Working Group on Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR)

Deadline: April 14th, 2023

Working Group members will facilitate the connection of scientists with industry representatives, entrepreneurs, foundations, nonprofits and other scientists across disciplines and career stages through the establishment ofregional node mCDR activities around the US. WG members will serve as regional team leaders who will plan and convene regional stakeholder meetings to initiate information exchange, community building, and collaboration. The conveners are seeking a range of expertise, career stage, and sector representation in the WG membership, and anticipate a duration of ~2 years for this WG.

Call: Recent advances and outlook in carbon capture, utilisation, storage, and atmospheric removal

for Goldschmidt Conference; Lyon, 9.-14. July

This session will focus on a wide range of geochemical, biogeochemical, and mineralogical aspects of carbon dioxide removal and storage in a range of reservoirs and environments. The coveners invite contributions from all aspects of carbon dioxide removal research, including lessons from natural systems, assessment of storage potential, reservoir permeabilities and possible migration pathways, geochemical and numerical modelling, fluid-rock interaction studies, using CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, fundamental mineralogy, laboratory experiments, biogeochemical approaches, carbonation of diverse wastes, and utilisation of carbonated products.

Climate Vault Announces Request For Carbon Removal Proposals

Deadline March 29, 2023

Climate Vault is set to fund up to 860,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and is inviting companies in the nascent industry to apply for grants. This is the first Climate Vault Request For Proposals (RFP) of 2023 and its process will find, evaluate and award funds to companies that can provide carbon removal through any of these three categories:

  • Terrestrial processes that include ecological, agricultural, biological, plant cultivar, and soil carbon ecosystems.
  • Technological innovations, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture (DAC), ex situ and in situ mineralization, and soil additions.
  • Oceanic-based processes, including ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and abiotic, electrolytic, biotic, blue carbon, and macroalgae systems.

Certification of carbon removals – EU rules

Deadline extended! 01 December 2022 – 23 March 2023

This initiative will propose EU rules on certifying carbon removals. It will develop the necessary rules to monitor, report and verify the authenticity of these removals. The aim is to expand sustainable carbon removals and encourage the use of innovative solutions to capture, recycle and store CO2 by farmers, foresters and industries. This represents a necessary and significant step towards integrating carbon removals into EU climate policies.

All feedback received will be summarised by the European Commission and presented to the European Parliament and Council with the aim of feeding into the legislative debate.
