Webinar: Scrubbing the Skies – Coccolithophores and diatoms resilient to ocean alkalinity enhancement

Thursday, September 14, 7 – 8pm CEST hosted by Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy

Join the next event in its webinar series, “Scrubbing the Skies: The Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change“ hosted by Wil Burns, Co-Director of the Institute for Carbon Removal and Policy. While there are promising prospects for marine-based carbon removal approaches to effectuate substantial sequestration of carbon dioxide, there are also concerns about the potential ramifications of these approaches for sensitive ocean ecosystems. This webinar will feature two researchers who will summarize the results of their most recent study, which assesses the potential ecosystem impacts of using ocean alkalinity enhancement as an approach to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while mitigating ocean acidification. The study focuses on the potential impacts of ocean alkalinity enhancement on phytoplanktonic organisms. These organisms are chosen for study because they fuel ocean carbon uptake and pelagic productivity and are therefore critical to the balance of marine ecosystems.

The Role of R&D and Policy for advancing Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in the EU

05. Sep; 08:30 – 14:00 MESZ

JPI Climate, in collaboration with German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Aerospace Centre Project Management Agency (DLR PT), seeks to bring together experts from academia, experts in EU policy on CDR, Delegates (funding representatives) and nominated experts from JPI Climate partner countries as well as key experts from non-JPI member states for this hybrid workshop. This workshop serves to:

  • inform about ongoing research at national and EU level
  • discuss research needs to support effective CDR policies and CDR implementation
  • identify gaps in R&D which could be addressed by JPI Climate
  • provide a useful platform to support the work of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) and European Energy Agency (EEA)

Webinar: IEAGHG Report – Prospective integration of Geothermal Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

Wed, Sep 27, 2023 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CEST

This webinar presents the key results of a study carried out by BRGM for IEAGHG in 2022-2023 reviewing the current state-of-the-art of technologies combining geothermal energy production and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Firstly, the various geothermal-CCS concepts identified through an extensive literature review are introduced. These concepts are classified into three main categories: i) use of supercritical CO2 as a heat vector for geothermal energy production and CCS; ii) water-driven geothermal concepts with CO2 injection/reinjection, generally dissolved in the geothermal brine; iii) other geothermal-CCS synergetic applications. Secondly, an analysis grid and screening methodology are applied in order to provide a framework for comparing the potential and performance of the identified concepts. Seven Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are considered addressing several aspects including replicability, scalability, environmental risks, and technical complexity.

Ocean-Climate Solutions Summit

October 17, 10:00 AM – October 19, 5:00 PM, Boston, Massachusetts (USA)

Ocean-based climate mitigation solutions are required to achieve net zero. It is anticipated that annual ocean-based carbon removal will need to reach the multi-gigaton scale – the same scale as today’s global oil and gas industry. The Ocean-Climate Solutions Summit will gather leaders from science, technology, finance, and policy to understand the strengths, gaps, and opportunities to create an aligned value chain.

Real Solutions or Expensive Distractions: Proving or Disproving Ocean-based Carbon Dioxide Removal in the Next 5 Years

September 22, 2023 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, New York (USA)

There is growing interest in ocean-based CDR techniques, but key questions remain about how effective they are in drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and durably storing it, as well as their environmental effects and safety. Join this session by Ocean Visions and co-host Sabin Center for Climate Change Law for an overview of what we know, and don’t yet know, about ocean-based CDR and what we need to do to get actionable information. They will discuss the need for in-ocean research, including controlled field trials, and explore social, ethical, and governance considerations.

Workshop: Connecting the Arts and Humanities with innovations in GGR

October 11, 2023; 10:00am-17:00pm; Rich Mix London

CO2RE invites artists, arts and humanities researchers, and social theorists to reflect on the role that a vibrant exchange of knowledge and ideas across the sciences, arts, and humanities can play in forging socio-culturally aware, responsible, and cohesive responses to the delivery of Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR).  The workshop will be followed by informal dinner and drinks. The Hub will pay participants travel costs to attend the event.

Webinar: Direct Air Capture in the Global South: Octavia Carbon

Monday, August 21 · 7 – 8pm CEST

The next event in the webinar series, “Scrubbing the Skies: The Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change.”: The series focuses on scientific, technological, legal, political, and justice-focused issues associated with CDR, and is hosted by Wil Burns, Co-Director of the Institute for Carbon Removal and Policy. Octavia Carbon, based in Kenya, is seeking to develop the first Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility in the Global South, as well as the cheapest DAC hub in the world. This webinar features two principals in the company to discuss the scale potential for a modular DAC approach to both help combat climate change and further Kenya’s development goals.
