Global Cement: Aalborg Portland Cement to launch carbon capture and storage project at Rørdal cement plant in 2022

„Denmark: Aalborg Portland Cement will begin construction of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system at its Rørdal, North Jutland, cement plant. It will collaborate with Project Greensand CCS consortium partners to store the captured CO2 in drained oilfields below the North Sea. The company estimates that the Danish part of the North Sea has 16Gt of CO2 storage capacity, out of 300Gt under all EU waters. The endeavour aims to help Denmark to realise its targeted 70% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030.“

Bellona: Fit for 2030 series: A Slow and Steady start for CDR in the EU

„Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) has recently emerged as an integral component of the EU’s climate neutrality goal. Within the European Climate Law, which sets this goal into EU law, the contribution of removals via the land sink are explicitly mentioned and kept separate from the need to reduce emissions in the run up to 2030. Overall, the Commission’s approach to CDR governance is off to an acceptable start. Land-based emissions and removals are isolated and no major ‘faux-pas’ has been made on engineered removals. That said, most of the important decisions are yet to come and how these will be made remains to be seen.“

Hydrogen4EU (2021): Charting Pathways to Enable Net Zero. Hydrogen for Europe study.

„This joint modelling effort is among the first to consider explicitly the latest European targets (e.g. the 55% CO2 emissions reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050). It allows for an analysis of hydrogen’s potential with a detailed technological, sectoral and geographic scope, including 27 European countries and considering the potential of hydrogen imports from North Africa, the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine.“

„We here explore the complexity of the infrastructures involved in realizing a large-scale system and the sequestration potential of bioenergy in Europe. Starting from a minimum cost scenario, we develop cost-optimal solutions that minimize the environmental impact of the overall BECCS supply chain according to the life cycle impact assessment methodology.“

„Here, we conceptually discuss various economic, legal, and political challenges surrounding the integration of CRCs into the EU ETS. To analyze cap-and-trade systems encompassing negative emissions, we introduce the effective (elastic) cap resulting from the integration of CRCs in addition to the regulatory (inelastic) cap, the latter now being binding for the net emissions only.“
