Sargoni, Janine (2016): The Best of Both Worlds: Maximising the Legitimacy of the EU’s Regulation of Geoengineering Research

Sargoni, Janine (2016): The Best of Both Worlds: Maximising the Legitimacy of the EU’s Regulation of Geoengineering Research. In European Journal of Risk Regulation 7 (1), pp. 87–108.

„This paper suggests how the regulation of Solar Radiation Management (SRM) field research in Europe could be designed to maximise the possibility of securing legitimacy. It argues that legitimacy is maximised when regulatory frameworks are legal, and also responsive, flexible, deliberative and inclusive.“

Gullberg, Anne Therese; Hovi, Jon (2016): Regulating Solar Radiation Management. In European Journal of Risk Regulation 7 (1), pp. 75–86.

„We consider three such questions. First, can existing EU decision-making processes accommodate sufficient public engagement to ensure legitimate decisions on SRM? Second, does politics influence the choice of legislative procedure for SRM regulation? Third, does the choice of legislative procedure influence the likelihood of SRM implementation?“

Fleurke, Floor (2016): Future Prospects for Climate Engineering within the EU Legal Order. In European Journal of Risk Regulation 7 (1), pp. 60–74.

„This article explores the prospects for the EU to develop a coherent policy regarding climate engineering (CE). To this end, we explore the most significant legal paramenters derived from EU law from which such a future EU policy would have to arise.“

Reynolds, Jesse (2016): Opening Editorial. Special Issue on Regulating Climate Engineering in the European Union. In European Journal of Risk Regulation 7 (1), pp. 58–59.

„Most attention ragarding the application of existing legal instruments, and the potential development of new ones, to regulate climate engineering has focused on the international area. International law will eventually be important, especially for the potential global implementation of solar radiation management.“

„Management of increased forest cover must also incorporate measures for reducing the direct and indirect impacts of changing climate on reforestation itself. Here we advocate a focus on “climate-smart reforestation,” defined as reforesting for climate change mitigation and adaptation, while ensuring that the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on reforestation are anticipated and minimized.“

Schlosberg, David (2015): Environmental Management in the Anthropocene. In Teena Gabrielson, Cheryl Hall, John M. Meyer (Eds.): The Oxford handbook of environmental political theory. Corby: Oxford University Press.

„Four different normative approches to environmental management will be examined. I will note key limitations of two key approches – classic preservation and conservation ethics, and the limits and boundaries discourse. An I will explore two very different paths that are potentially superchared by the Anthropocene – the hubris of new generation of prometheans, and the potential of an ecological receptive embodied in a politics of sight.“

Book including chapters on CE. „We are in effect creating an Earth 2.0 on which the human signature is everywhere, a „new earth“ in desperate need of humane and insightful guidance. In this volume, prominent scholars and practitioners in the field of global environmental politics consider the ecological and political realities of life on the new earth, and probe the field’s deepest and most enduring questions at a time of increasing environmental stress.“

Teaching Climate Law: A New Tool for Teaching the Ultimate Wicked Problem

„After more than 25 years in the climate change field, in 2010 Laura Kosloff and I began to use specialized TheBrain® software to build a climate knowledge solution with the lofty goal of helping users find “actionable knowledge” to support climate change thinking and decision-making. The open-access Climate Web contains far more information than any individual is likely to ever want to know; there just is no one-size-fits-all “actionable knowledge” when it comes to climate change.“
