Santos, Mónica P.S.; Manovic, Vasilije; Hanak, Dawid P. (2021): Unlocking the potential of pulp and paper industry to achieve carbon-negative emissions via calcium looping retrofit. In Journal of Cleaner Production 280, p. 124431. DOI: 10.1016/j.jclepro.2020.124431.

„This study proposes a new concept for conversion of the pulp and paper industry to carbon negative that relies on the inherent CO2 capture capability of the Kraft process.“

Soimakallio, Sampo; et al. (2021): On the trade-offs and synergies between forest carbon sequestration and substitution

Soimakallio, Sampo; Kalliokoski, Tuomo; Lehtonen, Aleksi; Salminen, Olli (2021): On the trade-offs and synergies between forest carbon sequestration and substitution. In Mitig Adapt Strat Glob Change 26 (1), pp. 1–17. DOI: 10.1007/s11027-021-09942-9.

„Forest biomass can be used in two different ways to limit the growth of the atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations: (1) to provide negative emissions through sequestration of carbon into forests and harvested wood products or (2) to avoid GHG emissions through substitution of non-renewable raw materials with wood. We study the trade-offs and synergies between these strategies using three different Finnish national-level forest scenarios between 2015 and 2044 as examples.“

Canadian Biomass: A natural win: wood pellets’ role in transitioning from fossil fuels

„While wood pellets are already part of the climate solution, the future holds even more promise. Emerging technology such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) promises to use wood pellets to achieve negative GHG emissions which are mixed with a solvent and then, instead of being released to the atmosphere, are sent through a pipeline to deep underground air pockets where they are permanently stored.“
